Irish International Karate Open - 2012

The UKF Squad attended the 2012 IIKO Tournament in Dublin on May 5th. Teams from Ireland, England and Russia took part. There was not a large entry but getting a place in the Quarter Finals was not easy and there were no easy medals either. There was a good competative standard. From a team of 14 Competitors, the UKF achieved Gold in 7 Events, Silver in 6 events and Bronze in 10 events. Columba, Denis and Paul Taylor assisted in Refereeing at the event. The UKF Senior team won the Senior Sanbon Team event against an English team. However, they were unfortunate in the Senior Rotation team event when they lost in Encho Sen against the same English team. However, the UKF Under 15 Kumite team who won the Shikon Open in 2011 took Gold in their team event. Congratulations to:

Gold Medalists (Conor Kerlin (Kumite); Denise Donaghey (Kata and Kumite); Dean Barron (Kumite); Shawn Barron (Veteran Kumite); Boys U15 Team Kumite (Conor Kerlin, Ryan Doherty, Conal Gill, and David Bell) and UKF Senior Sanbon Team (Dean Barron, Martin McCole, Glen Barron and Shawn Barron).

The 5th Ulster Karate-Do Federation Invitation Tournament 2012

The 5th UKF Invitation Tournament was held on 31st March 2012. This year there were competitors from Ireland, England, Romania, Belgium and Denmark. The numbers of entries were up from 2011 and the whole event was streamed live on the Internet (www.seeitlive.ie) and at last count there were almost 1000 views from Ireland, Europe and USA. It was a long but successful day and the behaviour of the competitors and coaches was impeccable. There was a very friendly but very competative atmosphere that is characteristic of WUKF competitions. Some Senior and Veteran Kumite sections such as Shobu Ippon, Shobu Sanbon and the Senior Rotation teams were fiercely contested. Federations commented on the fairness of the Referees. The UKF would like to thank all of the Competitors, Coaches, Mum and Dads who gave their time freely. Also, thanks is goiven to the newly qaulified Tournament Officials and Scorekeepers who operated the UKF's new Computerised Score System. For a first time, it was a daunting task. A big thanks to everyone who helped make it the success it was. The results can be found on the Latest News Section on the UKF Website or by clicking HERE

UKF Kata & Bunkai Seminar with Sensei Tibor Rostos 6th Dan

The UKF senior grades travelled to Collon Karate Club on the invitation from local instructor - Sensei Joe Smith 4th Dan. A very intensive Kata and Bunkai application seminar was taken by Sensei Tibor Rostos 6th Dan. It is always a pleasure to train with Sensei Tibor. His self defence system is very practical and very much based on actual Kata bunkai. The seminar commenced with normal basic kyu training and this provided the grounding for Kata practice. Following on was the Bunkai applied to Ku Shanku, Ni Seishi and also to Nai Hanchi. Finally, Sensei Tibor demonstrated Seipei Kata and then we practiced take down down techniques using the moves within this very popular Shito Ryu Kata. A big thank you to Sensei Joe Smith 4th Dan for the invitation to attend :)

UKF Kata Seminar with Sensei Mary Doherty 4th Dan

The UKF senior grades held a very intensive Kata seminar with Sensei Mary Doherty 4th Dan on the 18th feb 2012. This type of seminar is held regularly and allows the UKF Seniors to shapen their Kata skills. It also allows each of the UKF senior grades to explore the different bunkai applie to each kata. Each senior grade is expected to know all 15 Wado Ryu Kata and their knowledge and practice was tested during the seminar. A very good seminar indeed.
